Morning Stacks & Coffee

Golden morning light filtered in through the kitchen window as I finished making my morning coffee. Just as the machine finished sputtering away and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, CPKC train no. 133 — the typically nocturnal Montreal to Chicago hotshot — received a clearance down the hill into Hamilton. At only 4 degrees celsius, the morning air was brisk but inviting nonetheless, as I made my way trackside under beautiful clear skies. As I set up at a favourite location nearby, it wouldn’t be long before the morning stillness was broken by the sound of 133’s approaching train.

A surviving codeline pole from railroading days gone by can be seen to the left of Canadian Pacific GE AC4400CWM 8052 as it guides train no. 133 through the countryside at Waterdown, Ontario.
