Strathconas and SDs

Dashing through the freshly fallen snow at Waterdown, Ont., CP SD70ACU 7030 is “out of the barn” for a London to Buffalo run as it guides today’s CPKC train no. 238 along the Hamilton Subdivision. 7030 is one of two locomotives on CPKC’s roster that is dedicated to Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), an armoured regiment of the Canadian Army.

Not long after 238’s passage, word was out that CWR-25 was on the move out of Toronto with a pair of venerable EMD SD40-2s for power. Although I hadn’t planned on straying from home today, it’s hard to pass on an opportunity to photograph these aging workhorses and so I was off to Campbellville…

With the light fading fast but spirits undeterred, CP 5908 West put on quite the audial and visual performance as it lugged a couple thousand feet of CWR and mixed freight up the Niagara Escarpment at Campbellville over slick rails. With the ailing SD40-2s down on their knees, I had just enough time to position myself at Guelph Junction for one more photo before calling it a day.
